Jersey International Air Display

12 September 2019

September is the month for the Jersey International Air Display. Taking place annually, the free display centres around the wide curve of St Aubin’s Bay on Jersey’s south coast, close to St Helier when a fantastic array of modern and vintage military and international aircraft take to the skies with breathtaking displays.

Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft form a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and are then joined by daring acrobatic aerial teams such as The Red Arrows (sadly, not taking part in 2017), RAF Tucano Display Team and wing walking teams such as Aerosuperbatics. The RAF Team Merlin helicopter display team, SK60, Viggen and T28 ‘S’ craft have also featured along with Sally B, the last remaining airworthy B 17 in Europe. There’s also an opportunity to get up close to aircraft at the Airport with a static display. Military vehicles and static helicopter exhibitions also form part of the celebrations along with a model aircraft show.

The Battle of Britain

“The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin”

The insightful words spoken on 18 June 1940 in the House of Commons by Prime Minister Winston Churchill proved fateful when beginning on 7 September, British cities and strategic defences became the targets for Luftwaffe bombs in Hitler’s effort to destroy The Royal Air Force. Having not gained the desired effect and having not broken British morale, the most concentrated raid was a large scale aerial battle over London on 15 September 1940. Over 1,500 planes took to the skies in a fierce battle which culminated at dawn with RAF Fighter Command defeating the German attackers. Today we remember this week as Battle of Britain Week.

In Jersey, the Jersey International Air Display is held annually during the Battle of Britain commemorative week in September. Organised on behalf of The Royal Air Force Association (Jersey) Branch by Jersey Air Display A.R.L. the display not only pays homage to the brave pilots who defended our country but aims to raise funds for Forces Charities.
