A huge history!

Jersey may be a small island but it has a huge history! From ancient dolmans to Victorian defences, Jersey has a vast historical legacy with coin hoards and ancient artefacts as likely to be discovered today as WWII military equipment. Take a look at our Jersey Attractions page for details on the variety of historical places on the island. Heritage events are also held throughout the year so take a look at our news and events pages to see what’s on.

Liberation Day

Each year Jersey islanders celebrate and commemorate Liberation Day on 9th May as part of the anniversary of the end of the Occupation marking the remembrance of those who lost their lives during World War II and celebrating freedom from Occupation. A series of events take place around St Helier. The heritage festival has been timed to coincide with Liberation Day which now marks the end of the festival celebrations.

Liberation Day in Jersey and Guernsey falls on 9th May when formal remembrance services are followed by parades and celebrations. Sark celebrates its freedom from Occupation on 10th May and Alderney remembers 16th May as Liberation Day but commemorates the day islanders returned as Homecoming Day in December.
