Jersey Occupation Events – a quick guide to dates 

Liberation DayAs part of the de-militarised Channel Islands, Jersey found itself occupied by German troops during the second World War. Each year events take place celebrating the islands return to freedom. 2014 also sees 100 years since the start of World War I. Browse our Jersey Occupation events diary and find out a little more about what the two wars meant to the islanders.

7 – 11 May

Liberation Music Festival
Music recitals at various venues across the island with a theme of liberation, artistic freedom and the power of music to liberate the spirit.

Liberation Festival
Jersey Islanders celebrate their freedom:

9 May

The actual day that Jersey was liberated, is commemorated with a ceremony in Liberation Square in St Helier, starting with parades at 9:45. A service of thanksgiving and re-enactment of events in 1945, is followed by food and entertainment with a 1940’s theme at Weighbridge Square from 12:30 – 17:00.

Celebrates Liberation Day with its vintage motor collection and refreshments.

Occupation to Liberation
Sundays 10.30-13:00, St Helier
The story of Jersey’s Occupation and Liberation in a guided walk around the harbour in St Helier. Cost £5. Meet at Jersey Tourism, Liberation Place, St Helier.

6 May – 16 September

Living with the Enemy
Tuesdays 10:30 – 12:45, St Peter
A guided walk with special insight into the everyday life the islanders faced during the Occupation. See the trenches built by the enemy and finish at The Jersey War Tunnels. Cost £10.

7 May – 28 September Liberation Day

Behind Enemy Lines
Wednesdays/Sundays at variable times around 19:30 – 21:30, St Helier
Turn the clock back 70 years and find out some surprising truths about Jersey’s Occupation. Cost £10

12 May – 11 August

German Occupation Coastal Trail
Mondays, variable times around 10:00 – 13:00, St Brelade
Visit Battery Lothringen and an underground command bunker and bring the Occupation to life.

14 May

Jersey’s First World War
Parade Gardens, St Helier 10:30 – 13:00.
Free walk with a historical perspective provided by Jersey Tourism.

Jersey and the Great War – 12 voices

Individual stories in this exhibition, reflecting events in Jersey during World War I.

‘Remembering’ Exhibition at The Harbour Gallery, St Brelade
An exhibition of art in celebration of World War I. Free entry.
