The Bailiwick of Guernsey

The Bailiwick of Guernsey includes not just Guernsey but also the smaller islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm.

There's more to these islands than you may first think. True, there are the fabulous traditional cream teas and seafood suppers, plus, of course, the superb white sand beaches, hidden coves and wonderful cliff-top paths. These haven't changed, but there's a new buzz about the place. Gardens are looking a touch more exotic, shops are brimming with both eclectic and elegant things, and there are some cool new bars and restaurants opening up to join the great choice of existing watering holes and eateries. According to well known travel journalist Paul Mansfield "Guernsey is having a style moment" and he's clearly right.

Whilst on holiday in Guernsey, don't miss a visit to Castle Cornet for the museums and outdoor theatre and Hauteville House, once home to the eccentric writer Victor Hugo during his exile from France.

On your Guernsey holiday, visit the island of Herm for the day, it's just a 20 minute boat ride away. There aren't any cars here so enjoy the peace and nature of it all. A visit from May - July means you can do the Puffin Patrol, a two boat trip to see these amazing birds.

The island of Sark is also car free and travel here is by horse drawn cart, by bike (easy to hire for an hour or a week) or on foot. Join in the Sark Carnival from 11 - 13 August , explore Little Sark by crossing the spectacular La Coupee (a narrow isthmus which links Sark to Little Sark) or swim in crystal clear waters. Sark has been governed by a Seigneur since 1730 and La Seigneurie gardens are well worth a visit.

Alderney, with its varied wildlife - including blonde hedgehogs (really) - seems like a different world. Visit golden bays, Victorian fortresses and the little cobbled streets of St Anne, the capital.
